From my window I see the street; children play and friends meet, and all the while the sun moves in the sky and the hour draws near.

The knock, though expected, never fails to make me flinch. My body protests in the full and certain knowledge that in mere moments it will be in torment. Yet the pain I can withstand, for I have learned to close off my mind from it and from he who roughly takes his pleasure; he uses me and never knows that my other self is away in the palaestra, walking in sunlight with Sokrates.
